Abstract
This study delves into the dynamic interplay between socio-economic factors, auditory experiences, and cultural identity within the working-class soundscapes of Blackpool. Through an interdisciplinary approach rooted in sound studies and a metamodern framework of class, the research examines how economic status shapes individuals' auditory perception and responses, while considering the evolving acoustic ecology of Blackpool's transformation from a fishing village to a bustling seaside resort. Key questions address the influence of socio-economic status on auditory encounters, the potential distinctiveness of working-class soundscapes, and the role of sound in reinforcing class identity. The concept of privilege and silence is explored, along with its impact on shaping individuals' relationships with their sonic environment. The study also discusses the practical process, involving field recordings, interviews, site visits, and an analysis of challenges faced in practical work. The findings illuminate the nuanced sonic landscape of Blackpool and contribute to a deeper understanding of how class and sound intersect, impacting cultural identity within urban environments.
