Abstract
Urban public spaces have gradually emerged along with China's modernisation process. Urban public spaces are designed to encourage gathering and foster social interactions. Acoustic environments can provide essential conditions for people to ‘listen’ and ‘talk’, making soundscape studies crucial for the design of urban public spaces. In the process of urban regeneration, some of the earlier built urban public spaces are also facing regenerations and improvements due to their outdated designs and ageing facilities, as well as their unpleasant soundscapes. This study investigated companion types' patterns of use in the soundscape evaluations of two urban public spaces in Suzhou—Guanqian Square and Central Park Square—using observational and questionnaire methods. It was found that single people tended to stay in marginal and quiet areas, preferring privacy and peacefulness, while the accompanied individuals were evenly distributed in the square and paid more attention to the sounds of talking and children, preferring social sounds. This tendency was more pronounced in the groups that were in closer relationships. The ‘dancing groups’ observed in Central Park Square brought massive noise and interfered with the normal use of the square but attracted people from outside. This study highlighted sustainable soundscape design approaches for diverse companion types in urban public spaces and suggested innovative directions for soundscape research and urban regeneration.
