Abstract
A sound diary made by Canadian composer, broadcaster and soundscape recorder Murray Schafer as he crossed Manitoba in the winter of 1997. Produced for West German Radio, Cologne.
"The origin of "Winter Diary" is a journey I took through rural Manitoba, Canada, in the winter of 1997. Accompanied by Claude Schryer as my sound engineer, we drove along the roads, visiting small towns, farms, Indian reserves, and national parks. The snow was deep, and the temperature fluctuated between minus 15 and minus 40 degrees Celsius. The contrast between the warm and welcoming interiors of homes, restaurants, and churches and the harsh and silent landscapes outside, acoustically marked only by the wind, the passing of distant trains, or the howling of prairie dogs, is one of the main themes of the piece." (R. Murray Schafer)
-----
This album includes the excellent short introduction from Andrew describing Murray's groundbreaking work and the story of "Winter Diary" when the work was broadcast on The Listening Room.
It also includes a new work by Claude Schryer from 2022, "Winter Diary Revisited" (as well as a short interview with Claude), which is a tribute to R. Murray Schafer made after he passed away in August 2021. Schafer’s writing and the research undertaken with the World Soundscape Project were foundational to the development of the field of acoustic ecology, and Schryer goes back to Schafer’s diaries that he was keeping in the late 1990’s when the two worked together on the production of "Winter Diary". The work is "a soundscape composition of mine based on an unpublished essay that composer Murray wrote after our field trip to record "Winter Diary". I revisited this trip by illustrating Schafer's text with new winter soundscapes recorded in Ontario and Quebec in 2022 as well as archival soundscapes" (Claude Schryer).
