Abstract
Costa Rica's rainforests are lively and active at night, even if it might not seem like it. A night walk in the jungle will reveal countless creatures going about their business - hunting or trying to avoid hunters, looking for food and sometimes searching for a mate. Since it gets so dark in the rainforest, most creatures rely on sound to communicate. Owls, insects and frogs have evolved to communicate using a variety of sounds.

These Smilisca tree frogs I found at a creek in the jungles of Costa Rica's Corcovado National Park have developed an interesting strategy to avoid being detected by predators while still being able to advertise to potential mates. They synchronize their calls between individuals situated in a small area so that when one of them croaks, the others do so too in very quick succession. The result of this approach is long periods of silence and then a sudden moment where several individuals call from different spots, making it almost impossible to locate them by sound alone.

The owls you can hear in the first part of the recording (possibly Mottled owls - Strix virgata) don't have that problem so they are loud and easy to locate. It's easy to see how their haunting calls have inspired so many stories and folklore over the ages. The insect chorus can sound monotonous and shrill, but the jungle becomes eerie and mysterious as soon as the owls start calling.

Recorded with Sony PCM A10 and Lom mikroUsi Pro microphones on the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica. Video loop shot in 8k with the Sony A1 and Sony 90mm Macro lens. The first 8k video on my channel!
