Abstract
Winter Diary Revisited - Homage to R. Murray Schafer is a soundscape composition featuring excerpts from an unpublished essay that R. Murray Schafer wrote after a 10-day field recording trip that he undertook with Claude Schryer in rural Manitoba in February 1997. The recordings made on the trip were produced and edited for a radio piece for the program Akustische Kunst on Westdeutscher Rundfunk Köln (WDR). Schryer ‘revisits’ this trip by mixing Schafer's writing with archival soundscapes as well as new winter soundscapes recorded in Ontario and Quebec in 2022. This new piece forms episode 99 of the conscient podcast series produced by Claude Schryer. The French language version of this piece is episode 100 of the conscient podcast: Journal d'hiver revisité - Hommage à R. Murray Schafer.

Murray Schafer passed away on August 14, 2021. I was asked to write a remembrance piece for Murray by Eric Leonardson president of WFAE and by Kirk MacKenzie and Robin Elliott of the University of Toronto. Darren Copeland, Artistic Director of New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA) and the Deep Wireless Festival of Radio and Transmission Art expressed an interest in helping to produce this piece. Instead of writing a remembrance article about Murray, I decided to produce this audio piece.

The final mix was realized as part of a residency at the New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA) in South River, Ontario (Darren Copeland, artistic director) and premiered at the Deep Wireless on February 5, 2022.

e99 winter diary revisited - homage to r. murray schafer (25' introduction + 40' composition in 12 parts + 3m credits) is a 68-minute episode that closes season 3 and features a soundscape composition of mine based on an unpublished essay that composer R. Murray Schafer wrote after a 10-day field recording trip that he and I undertook in rural Manitoba in February 1997 to produce a radio program on winter soundscapes for the Westdeutscher Rundfunk Köln (WDR).

In this episode, I ‘revisit’ this trip by illustrating Schafer's text with new winter soundscapes recorded in Ontario and Quebec in 2022 as well as archival soundscapes. The final mix was realized and presented as part of a residency at the New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA) in South River, Ontario.
