Abstract
The “silence of abysses”, the “song of the sirens”, and “the scream of billows” are some of the mental images common to several coastal cultures that have inspired the literature at any time.

Sound travels in the water at a speed five times higher than in the air. This property transforms the seascape into a medium where sounds are important components of the structure and dynamic of many ecological mechanisms, and the water surface takes on the role of an acoustic ecotone (sonotone) where water and air sounds converge. The underwater soundscape creates patterns along a depth and salinity gradient affecting the communication of soniferous species like fishes, shrimps and marine mammals.

The marine sound is managed by several threats that result from an unprecedented human intrusion in marine ecosystems. Sound pollution due to trading, fishing, recreation/touristic ships and oil and gas seismic exploration associated with a change of pH of water due to an increase of CO2 of anthropogenic origin are transforming large volumes of water medium in hostile environments where animal communication is masked or altered.

The acoustic conservation of marine soundscape should be a priority in every political agendaon a global scale to prevent the biological death of marine systems.
